New Faroe - Denmark route?
09 May 2006 Ferry competitor emerges
Shetland Today

TROUBLED Faroese ferry company Smyril Line could find itself facing competition on the route between Faroe and Denmark.
A new company called FaroeCruise is planning to start up a passenter route between Copenhagen and Torshavn next summer.
The company had originally been planning to launch the new service this summer.

But a press conference to announce the company's plans which had been due to take place last week was cancelled at the last minute after
Estonian ferry company Tallink unexpectedly pulled out of a contract to lease a vessel to FaroeCruise.
FaroeCruise chief executive Kari Davidsen said this week that there was now not enought time to find a vessel for this summer, so the new route would not be launched until next year.

The company plans to use a ferry capable of accommodating 800 passengers and around 200 cars.
The route will only operate between June and the end of August, though this could be expanded to include the latter half of May and the first half
of September. Shetland Development Trust has a 26 per cent holding in Smyril Line following the decision to plough £4.4m into the company in 2002.

More trouble for Smyril?

FERRY operators Smyril Line in whom Shetland has a major financial stakecould be facing competition next year in the form of a rival shippingcompany.

Newly formed Faroe Cruise are planning on running a summer only ferryservice between Tórshavn, in Faroe, and the Danish capital Copenhagen. Faroe Cruise chief executive Kari Davidsen said yesterday (Tuesday) theywould be running a weekly service between the two cities during June, July and August next year.

The return trip would take four days, giving the ferry the chance to visit other parts of northern Europe and Great Britain during the rest of the week. Mr Davidsen did not rule the possibility of a regular call in Shetland along the way.

He said: "We have been working on the project for almost two years now. It is a new company with Faroese financial backing from a group of Faroese investors.

"Our plans were to start this direct route this summer, but our plans fell through because the company we made a deal with to charter their ship decided to keep it for the summer months. So we are working on the same project for next year."

Mr Davidsen said he believed there was a market for direct ferry trips to the Danish capital, even though Smyril already sail their ferry Norröna to Jutland every summer and there are direct flights to Copenhagen from Tórshavn.

"We have been talking to people from Faroe living in Denmark and people inthe industry here and we have received positive feedback. We are quitecertain there is a market for a direct route."

Last month Shetland Development Trust decided to invest a further £1.5 million into Smyril Line on top of their existing stake of £4.45 million. The local investment agency is trying to help the company overcome serious financial problems which last year saw record losses of £4.8 million.

The main problem facing the company is how to make money out of its huge ferry Norröna during the long winter months when there is very little traffic. An attempt to resolve the difficulty by merging with Norwegian operators Fjord Line fell through last year.

Kyseessähän on vakavasti otettava yritys.
