Eli tähän topicciin voisi sitten kerätä tietoja kun niitä heruu, että mitä laivoja käytetään Beirutin evakuoinnissa... Tähän mennessä Ranskan hallitus on rahdannut IERAPETRA L:n ja Ruotsin hallitus KRITI II:sen.

Jenkit pääsee sitten ykkösluokassa valtion kustantamalle risteilylle ::). Suomalaiset taasen potkittiin pihalle ranskalaisten rahtaamasta aluksesta :(.

I just saw FAIRPLAY (19.07) on line article, that the Australian government chartered "FERRY" for evacuation mission.
In first place SERENADE is NOT ferry but cruise vessel. I understend that daily newspaper's do not see any difference between ferry or a cruise vessel. But a maritime magazine should know better !!

SERENADE was cruising to Greek Islands from Pireaus still last week.

According to today's The Australian newspaper, the government has chartered the ageing ferry Serenade for its Lebanon evacuation mission. The 1957-built ship, originally called Jean Mermoz, is currently operated by Louis Shipmanagement of Greece under the Bahamas flag.

Fairplay today.

Aleksi Lindström

Risto, you're absolutely right, Fairplay should know better, especially when the ship in question is such a classic one!!

SERENADE:

P.S. Ja nyt vaikuttaa siltä että PREVELIStä ei käytetäkään evakuoinnissa...

Risto and Aleksi have commented on a news item on Fairplay Daily News that described Serenade as a ferry, citing The Australian newspaper.

You are right,it is a cruise ship so the story has an error. However, while it may be of interest from an enthusiasts' point of view as "a classic" as Aleksi refers to the ship, the opposite is the case from that of a trade magazine. A 50 year old vessel that is confined to trade on secondary routes and cater for the bottom end of the market, it is of marginal interest. Its vintage does not mean that it is better known than modern, big cruise ships.

Kari,

Some comments.

If old vessels are of marginal interest to "a trade magazine = read Fairplay", it is no excuse for ignorance.

As to her trading on "secondary routes" she was in good company of Costa Cruises, Princess Cruises, Windstar Cruises, Star Cruises, just to mention a few, all of them cruising to Greek Islands.

And what is wrong, that she "cater for the bottom end of the market". At least it is cheap. ::)

Risto,

Yes, old vessels are of marginal interest to a trade magazine, Fairplay among them, as the cruise industry is dominated by three or four major groups with modern tonnage. I tried to make the point that if an error was to occur, it is likelier in case of an old vessel than a modern one. A shipping enthusiast may regard an old ship as one that stands out and is therefore better recognised.

The Greek islands are about the only part of the world where a 50 year old ex liner can trade in today's cruise industry. The collapse of Premier Cruises after 9/11 wiped them away en masse from North America.

As to what is wrong with these ships that cater for the bottom end of the market, I'd say they are totally obsolete in terms of facilities. There is very little you can do on an ex liner from the 1950s or even on most first generation cruise ships of the early 1970s. Once they may have lead the way forward, today they are drags for the image of the industry.

Kari,

I undrestand you point of view.

But, it is good that there are still some old "ladies" around !  ::)
Cruise market should be quite dull with only this fancy floatings hotels.  ???
