COSTA Crociere has placed orders for three new cruiseships. Two, worth €420m ($490m) each, are for its own fast expanding fleet while a third € 330m order has been placed for German market specialist Aida.
The orders for Costa — one firm order for a 92,700 gt cruiseship, with an option for a second identical vessel — were won by Fincantieri and will be built at the Italian shipbuilder's Marghera yard.
The ships, equipped with 1,130 cabins, 772 of which will have a private balcony, and with a passenger capacity of 2,260, are scheduled for delivery in the spring of 2009 and, if confirmed, the autumn of 2010. The order for Aida was placed with German yard Meyer Werft, also for delivery in 2010.
The 68,500 gt vessel with a passenger capacity of 2,050 is the fourth in a series ordered for Aida over the past 19 months and due for delivery at a rate of one each year from next year on.
The orders add to an already sizeable newbuilding portfolio for Carnival-owned Costa Crociere, which has expanded fast in recent years and is set for further rapid growth in capacity.
Costa now has five ships on order and Aida four, representing an additional 21,720 lower berths.
