The Estonian Maritime Administration signed a contract today with Trans Viking Icebreaking & Offshore AS, a Norwegian company, for chartering an additional icebreaker for the winter navigation season of 2011-2012. The icebreaker is to provide icebreaking services in the Gulf of Finland in addition to the I/B Tarmo.
The chartered vessel Tor Viking has ice class and flies the Swedish flag. The length of the vessel is 84 metres, breadth 18 metres, draft 7.2 metres, and main engine output 13,400 kW. The owners may replace it, if necessary, with a sister ship, either the Balder Viking or the Vidar Viking. The contract is valid from 01 January 2012 to 31 March 2012 and the price is 3.42 million euro, with fuel costs added. The contract can be extended up to 14 days, if necessary. The ship will arrive in Tallinn on 04 January 2011.
According to Director General of the MA, Mr Andrus Maide, the contract enables Estonia to organise icebreaking activities more efficiently, since ensuring satisfactory icebreaking service in the Gulf of Finland with only the 48-year-old I/B Tarmo is a complicated matter, and just one icebreaker is not enough to service all Estonian ports in the Gulf of Finland."
